Domestic abuse, both physical and mental, is a largely unseen crime. It takes a lot of courage for victims to leave an abusive situation. They are vulnerable, not sure what to do, worried about money, safety, and possibly having to go to court, especially if there are children involved.
Victims of domestic abuse do not have a simple, single source of information to address their immediate concerns and nothing specific to Dorset. Additionally, an independent review of the Specialist Domestic Abuse Courts uncovered serious failings and shortcomings in how victims are treated in these courts.
Poole Purbeck & District Soroptimists found out about these difficulties and decided to produce a ‘one-stop’ booklet for those fleeing a domestic abusive situation, encompassing practical information on the services available from simple helpline advice on benefits and housing to longer-term support and counselling, as well as the court system and their legal rights.
The ‘Fresh Thoughts’ booklet was officially launched to an invited audience of professionals working in domestic abuse in East Dorset and included presentations by Michael Tomlinson M.P. and David Sidwick, Dorset Police and Crime Commissioner. Queen Camilla had heard of the initiative and sent a letter of support which was read out by the High Sheriff.
Whilst the booklet is specific to Dorset, interest has been sparked from all over the country and a request for booklets has even come in from New Zealand! Copies will be available shortly in all Dorset and BCP libraries.
There will be another launch event on 20th June to cover West Dorset, from 10.30am to noon, at Dorset Community Church Hall in Poundbury. For more information contact sipoole@btinternet.com.
